Treating Common Childhood Ailments

Treating Common Childhood Ailments

Colds

In babies, the nose may become blocked, leaving them unable to suck properly. Nose drops help to clear the mucus. For babies over 3 months and young children, liquid paracetamol helps relieve aches and pains.

Coughs

Your pharmacist can advise on the right type of cough medicine, depending on whether the cough is dry or not.

Fever

Give liquid paracetamol. Make sure you use the correct dosage for the child's age - too small a quantity will not reduce the temperature. You can also give relief by sponging the top of the child's body with tepid water and allowing it to evaporate.

Stomach Ache

Children often complain of this when they have colds or other viral illnesses, because glands in their abdominal area swell and become tender. Give liquid paracetamol to ease the discomfort.

Stomach ache can also be caused by constipation. Make sure children have sufficient fibre from fruit, vegetables, and wholegrain cereals and bread. They should also have plenty to drink, every day.

Vomiting and Diarrhoea

Give plenty of fluids. Babies under six months become dehydrated more easily than older children, so seek medical advice if they refuse liquid.
