Storage Ideas for the Bedroom

Bedrooms are often home not just to clothes and associated accessories, but also to sports equipment, extra bedlinen, luggage, and ironing equipment. Ease the pressure by utilising other spaces. A boxroom, wide landing, or understairs alcove could accommodate, for example, a trunk, cupboard, or chest of drawers.

Vacuum Storage Packs

Vacuum storage packs fit into small spaces. Fill with clothes or bedding, then shrink down using suction from a vacuum cleaner.

Bed Drawers

Buy a bed with drawers underneath. Failing that, fill the space under the bed with zipped, breathable duvet and blanket bags, or plastic boxes and crates with lids.

Shoe Storage

Get shoes off the floor and on to racks or in to narrow, purpose-built cupboards. Hanging pockets that hook over the top of a door are a cheap solution for shoe storage, and hung inside a wardrobe can be used for scarves, socks, or underwear.

Alternative Drawer Space

Short of drawers? Canvas hanging-holders, divided into generous slots for T-shirts or sweaters, use only 30 cm (12 in) of wardrobe width. Pocketed organisers are useful in shallow drawers, to segregate underwear and other small items.

Wardrobe Space

If you're short of wardrobe space, sort clothes by season, and store those not currently in use in breathable bags under the bed. Hang clothes of the same length together. Many items - jackets, shirts, short skirts, folded trousers - only use half the height of a standard hanging-rail, allowing you to fit a second half-height rail below the original one. Add a shelf at the top for luggage and bags. Hang ties and belts on the inside of the wardrobe door.
