Clothes, Bedding, and Curtains

  • Clothes on hangers are best transported in travelling wardrobes.
  • Otherwise, use sports bags or suitcases.
  • Clothing in chests of drawers may be able to be left in situ, although if in doubt pack them separately - the drawers may need to be removed to lighten the load.
  • Other clothes, bedding, linen, and curtains can be rolled or folded and transported in bin bags.
  • If bedding for the first night won't travel with you in a car, keep it separate and easily accessible.

Carpets

  • Roll carpet round a core of PVC or a cardboard roller. It can take three people to roll a large carpet.
  • Clear the carpet of furniture.
  • Stand on the carpet, in a row, facing one end.
  • Lift the edge and walk backwards until about 3m/10 ft. of the carpet is lying face down.
  • Put the roller in position and roll up this part of the carpet.
  • Pick up the roller and walk backwards again, repeating the process until the whole carpet is on the roller.

Rugs

  • Never crush a rug by folding it right side in. Roll fringe to fringe, right-side outside, so that the pile is stretched not squashed.
  • For valuable rugs, interleave with acid free tissue paper.
