Booking Your Removals Firm

If you're booking a removals company, try following this 5 step plan:

Step 1

Invite at least three removal firms to provide free quotes. Ideally, get personal recommendations. Firms should be members of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) or the British Association of Removers (BAR) or both. Most major companies provide a variety of levels of service which may include a standard move (load and unload only), fragile packing, full packing service, and combination service (e.g. packing and unload but not unpack). They may also provide storage services.

A company may give you a rough estimate over the telephone, which will give you a good idea of the final cost, but they should send a representative to provide a detailed quotation.

Step 2

Arrange for the company estimator to visit your home and take stock of your belongings and requirements, and note any potential problems, for instance large pieces of furniture. Don't forget to include everything, such as the contents of your garage, garden, attic, loft, cellar, annexe and workshop, as quotations can increase dramatically if you add things later.

If there are access or parking restrictions for a large truck at either end, you should warn the estimator, as this is likely to influence the quotation.

Step 3

Each firm should then send you a clear list of what is to be moved, a step-by-step description of the process, and the detailed price quotation, including clearly explained insurance terms.

Companies base quotes on the number of hours they expect loading and unloading to take, the amount of fuel required, driving time and extras such as navigation of difficult stairs and using winches to access upper floors.

Step 4

Compare services and quotes, and get back to the firms with any questions.

• Does the quote include packing and packaging?
• Does it include insurance and VAT?
• Are special packing materials, such as acid free tissue, used to protect valuables?
• Are coverings used to protect banisters and carpets?
• Are padded jackets used to pack grand pianos and other awkward items?
• How many staff will work on the removal?
• What training have the staff had?
• How often are lorries serviced?

Consider whether staff are helpful - an important part of their service is to give you peace of mind.

Step 5

Once you have made your decision, sign the acceptance form.

Always try to negotiate on price - you may be pleasantly surprised at the reduction (or extras) you can get simply by asking.
